The Church # 2 - A Holy Nation When God created man in His Image, (possessing His character), one of the many attributes (apart from many others), that God expected man to reflect was His attribute of holiness. But we know what happened in the Garden of Eden - man lost it and began to display anything but holiness from that day forward. The consequences were so disastrous that the Lord eventually decided to destroy the world completely with a flood and save just one righteous man (Noah) and his family from which the world once again began to multiply. Have things changed since then? Yes, only for the worse. God then called Abraham, with the intent to found the nation of Israel - a nation that God would refer to later as a 'holy nation,' (Ex.19:6) - a nation that would be God's chosen instrument to eventually reach all the nations of the world. The Church # 1 - Salt and Light Matthew 5:13-16 - " You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavour? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it nder a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." (NLT). Identity and Purpose - It's amazing that two of the initial things the Lord spoke to his first Church Members (His Disciples), was concerning their Identity and Purpose. Not only did Jesus tell the disciples WHO THEY WERE but in the same breath even told them WHY THEY WERE. We The Church today need to remember our Identity in Christ and our Purpose for being saved.
